BUTLER TWP — The executive director of Butler County Community College’s campus police and security will retire at the end of January.

Pat Massaro, who was hired as a part-time business instructor in 1989, will leave after serving as director of campus security since 2009.

His retirement announcement was made Wednesday by BC3 President Nick Neupauer to the college board of trustees.

No decisions have been made about how that position will be filled, Neupauer said.

[naviga:h3]Hunters harvest 143 bears during last day of season[/naviga:h3]

Hunters killed 143 bears during the fourth and final day of the state’s statewide bear season, making the preliminary harvest for 2015 at 2,693 bears.

That’s more than a 10 percent increase over the 2,444 bears taken last season during the four-day statewide season.

In all, 3,366 bear were harvested last year.

In Butler County, 18 bears were harvested this year. In 2014, 23 were harvested.

The figures were released Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and are only preliminary.

That’s because archery and other early bear season numbers were still being entered into the commission’s database.

Bears have been taken in 54 of 67 counties.

The heaviest bears taken so far weighed 713 pounds each. One was killed in Granville Township in Mifflin County, the other in Blair Township in Blair County.
