Fire breaks out at stone house

Demonstration marred by blaze

BRADY TWP — A small chimney fire broke out Saturday at the Old Stone House during a cooking demonstration.

The fire started about 4:45 p.m. at the museum, which is run by Slippery Rock University. During an event that was sponsored by SRU’s history department, a chef was cooking in the fireplace when the flames from the cooking ignited something in the chimney.

“It started in the chimney and went to the structure of the house,” said Chief Ken Taggart of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company.

By the time firefighters arrived, everyone who was attending the event had evacuated the building, which was built in 1822. Nobody was injured.

Taggart said there were concerns about the fire spreading due to old, dry wood in the structure. Because of this, firefighters stayed a little longer than usual to make sure that the fire was completely extinguished.

“It could have went bad quickly,” Taggart said.

He said the damage appeared to be minor.

Rita Abent, an SRU spokesman, said the damage to the building mostly appears to be smoke related.

“A full assessment will be made through our health and safety department,” Abent said in an e-mail.

In addition to Slippery Rock, the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company responded to the fire.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:08 p.m.
