Man gets 2 to 5 years in prison

He pleads guilty to aggravated assault

A Clearfield Township man will spend up to 5 years in prison for attempting to stab a man during a bar fight.

Robert L. Fry, 35, initially had been charged with attempted homicide for the incident in January. However, as part of a plea arrangement with the Butler County District Attorney’s office, Fry pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime. In exchange for the plea, the prosecution recommended Fry be sentenced to serve 2 to 5 years in prison followed by 15 months of state probation.

County Judge William Shaffer issued that sentence Thursday.

Fry, who already has spent more than 200 days in prison awaiting resolution of the case, made no comments in court. And the victim, Michael Godlewski of Cabot, did not attend the hearing.

According to court records, the assault happened at Runt’s Roadhouse Bar on North Pike Road after Fry approached a woman who told him she was married.

Later, Godlewski began speaking with the woman, and Fry told him not to do that because she was married.

Godlewski told Fry he knew that, adding he and the woman were just talking, according to documents.

Police said this aggravated Fry, who started a verbal altercation with Godlewski. Fry then allegedly pulled out a knife with a 5-inch curved blade with spikes coming out of the handle. Fry attempted to stab Godlewski, but Godlewski was able to tackle him and hold him down until police arrived.

Godlewski suffered a cut on the right side of his nose and was bitten on his forearm.

As part of the sentence, Fry was ordered to pay $70 in restitution to Godlewski and $370 to the hospital that treated Godlewski.
