Zelie pool to get $700,000

Grant goes to renovation

ZELIENOPLE — Borough Council President Allen Bayer had good news at Monday’s borough council meeting.

The borough got a notice from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that it has received $700,000, the full amount of grant money it applied for, to be used to renovate the community swimming pool.

Council members said getting the full amount was “not expected.”

“We expected maybe $250,000 to $350,000 from this,” borough manager Don Pepe said. “But due to the circumstances and quality of our application, we received the full amount.”

Some new features being explored for the pool include a zero-entry to better accommodate those with physical challenges and toddlers and swimming lanes for competition.

A storm drainage system also will be installed to deter water from the adjacent creek overflowing at the pool in heavy rains.

The possibility of a diving board also is being considered.

The overall cost of just renovating the pool is about $1.5 million. With additional landscaping and amenities, the cost would be about $2.3 million.

The tentative plan is to renovate the pool over two to three years. However, renovations without landscaping and extra amenities could be complete by next year with good funding.

“This is a huge step,” said Councilmember Mary Hess of the state grant.

Council is looking at receiving federal funding from the Greenways Mini-Grant, and the parks board also will seek additional grant money in 2016.
