Inmate faces charges

She's accused of smuggling drugs into county prison

Spending time in jail can be stressful.

That’s why Tabitha M. Thomas told authorities she smuggled sleep medication into the Butler County Prison, according to court documents.

But that wasn’t the only drug they found on the inmate this month. She also was allegedly caught with anti-anxiety medication.

County Detective Tim Fennell on Friday charged Thomas, 25, of Tarentum, Allegheny County, with a pair of felonies in the case.

Thomas was booked into the prison Sept. 4 after she was arrested on two bench warrants at her home. The warrants were issued Aug. 10 in connection with separate cases of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia in Butler County.

However, before she surrendered, documents said, she placed a pill bottle in her body. It contained seven pills of Trazodone, an antidepressant commonly prescribed for insomnia.

Additionally, in the bottle were two tablets of alprazolam, the generic name for the medication Xanax, which is prescribed to treat panic disorder and anxiety.

She managed to get the drugs into the prison undetected. But the next day prison officers, aided by a tip from an inmate, discovered the bottle in her cell.

Fennell on Thursday interviewed the suspect, who confessed.

“Thomas stated she brought the Trazodone into the jail to help her sleep,” Fennell said in charging documents.

She is charged with smuggling a controlled substance into prison and possession of a controlled substance by an inmate.

Fennell said he expected Thomas to be arraigned on those new charges this week. She remains in prison on the warrants.
