Three students in Butler County are semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship program.
Jacob Rickabaugh and Siona Sharma of Seneca Valley High School were named as well as Rebecca Dvorak of Mars High School.
About 16,000 high school seniors nationwide are semifinalists. More than 7,000 of those students will receive college scholarships from the program.
Students are screened for the scholarship based on PSAT scores. Semifinalists include the highest scoring test takers in each state.
To be considered as finalists, semifinalist students can submit an application that includes academic record, school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and honors received.
Luke Anderson and AJ Cordek, sixth graders at Sugarcreek Elementary School, traveled to Washington, D.C., over the summer for the Junior National Young Leaders Conference.Both students were nominated by their fifth grade teacher, Mary Twentier, based on their leadership skills shown in the classroom and with other classmates.
During the conference, they learned how leaders take a stand and make a difference.They also visited Capitol Hill and several historic monuments.
