Captured entrances being reconfigured
JEFFERSON TWP — New captured entrances built over the summer at all four school buildings in the South Butler County School District are being reconfigured.
The $650,000 project included kiosks outside the primary, intermediate elementary, middle and high school where visitors could swipe their driver’s license to be scanned through the state Megan’s Law registry before going inside.
However, David Zupsic, superintendent, said those kiosks will have to be moved inside to vestibule areas.
“The ones we purchased weren’t designed to be out in the elements,” he said.
Other new security features at each of the schools include “bank teller windows” in vestibule areas with large drawers that can fit items like gym clothes, books and lunches.
Another set of doors let visitors into the building, but only if they have an approved driver’s license free of child or sex abuse charges.
The biggest issue now is with the Internet connection with the kiosks, which Zupsic said he hopes to have resolved by next week.
“It sounds like once they get an Internet connection, everything is going to be operational 100 percent,” he said.
Fred L. Burns Inc. of Clarion did the general construction while the Merit Electrical Group of Oakmont did the electrical work.
