Stellar Pitt receiver Boyd charged with DUI
Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd was charged with driving under the influence Wednesday as a result of a traffic stop early Friday in Jefferson Hills
Boyd, 20, also faces summary charges for underage drinking and traffic violations. A preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. Aug. 5.
He was pulled over at about 2:35 a.m. Friday after trying to pass another vehicle on Route 885 in Jefferson Hills. When stopped, the officer smelled a “moderate amount of alcoholic beverage” on Boyd’s breath, according to the police report.
The report said Boyd admitted to having “two shots” about 1 a.m. after watching the fourth game of the NBA Finals. A breath test came back positive for alcohol and Boyd was placed under arrest and transported to Jefferson Hospital, where he underwent blood tests to determine his blood alcohol content.
After the blood tests, Boyd was released to the custody of a family member.
Jefferson Hills Police Chief Eugene Roach said Monday that police were still awaiting results of the test, but he anticipated having them before Boyd’s preliminary hearing.
The charges were filed with Jefferson Hills District Judge Guy Reschenthaler.
The legal blood-alcohol limit to operate a vehicle in Pennsylvania is .08 percent, but because Boyd is under 21, he could face a DUI if his blood-alcohol content is over .02.
Boyd was the Panthers’ leading receiver each of the past two seasons, and is the first player in ACC history to record 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi released a statement Saturday night calling Boyd’s situation “both serious and disappointing.”
