Ex-tenant, others accused of stealing

Owner says rental home vandalized, looted

BUTLER TWP — A tenant who allegedly caused a flood bad enough to have her rental home condemned, reportedly was among a handful of people to ransack the empty house on Whitestown Road, vandalize furniture and loot thousands of dollars worth of collectibles, tools and guns from the homeowner.

Court records say the victim first contacted Butler Township Police on April 1, when he realized a toolbox and tools with a cumulative value of $13,000 were missing from his garage.

The next day, the homeowner again called police to report three guns also were missing from under his bed: a Cricket 22 long rifle, a Remington 3006 with sling and scope and a Marlin 30-30 lever action with a sling and scope. He also noted missing personal items and damage to his furniture, a ceiling fan and stuffed animal toy, according to court records.

The victim told police that a former tenant, 43-year-old Tina Bailey of Butler Township, a few months earlier “had flooded the place” and he hadn’t visited it much during the months it had been condemned. Therefore he didn’t realize how much was missing.

About a week after his initial report, the homeowner contacted police again when he allegedly got a text message from Bailey, saying she didn’t know who took his belongings but some of them were in her neighbors’ house.

According to court records, Bailey then contacted investigators directly and alleged she had been living with Bridget Kaiser, 33, and Dan Cervone, 21. And while in their home, she saw some of the items reported missing from the victim’s house.

Bailey and her boyfriend, 34-year-old James Horne, then reported to the police station where they told police they saw the missing items and believed Kasier and Cervone had stolen them from the victim’s house over several weeks.

Kaiser, the pair told police, was wearing a stolen wedding ring, according to court records

After obtaining a warrant, police searched the home of Kaiser and Cervone allegedly finding many of the stolen items. Some items, including military dog tags, still had the victim’s name on them, according to court records.

Much of the property had been damaged. For example, collectible toy cars had been removed from unopened boxes and played with. An autographed guitar had the signature removed.

Kaiser, when interviewed by police, alleged said she had helped Bailey and Horne remove the items from the victim’s house. She allegedly told police she knew the items were stolen but decided to keep them because Bailey had stolen some clothes from her.

Later, Kaiser reportedly told one of the police officers that she knew she was stealing the victim’s property but “she only did it because Bailey told her what an awful person (the victim) was and she thought he deserved it.”

She implicated yet another person, 21-year-old Mike Hollingsworth of Butler, as taking part in the thefts.

When interviewed, Horne at first denied taking anything, but then confessed, saying “he was sorry and agreed to return as many items as he could.”

Horne, at that time, was wearing a “dog tag cross necklace” that was stolen. He returned that as well as three dozen more items that were at his house on American Avenue and another handful of items from his mother’s Hill Top Avenue home, according to court records.

Bailey, who was at the Hill Top Avenue home, then reportedly confessed to her role, allegedly saying she did it because the victim had changed the lock on the apartment door she had rented.

According to court records, Hollingsworth later also acknowledged his role in the thefts, reportedly telling investigators that he took only a tent “because he was homeless at that time and it was cold.” He said the tent was later stolen from him.

Cervone allegedly acknowledged only keeping a few coins, according to court records.

All of the suspects are charged with burglary, conspiracy, two counts of theft and receiving stolen property, trespassing and criminal mischief. Cervone faces an additional charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bailey faces an additional charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana.

The charges were filed Wednesday at the office of District Judge Kevin O’Donnell, and all of the defendants are expected to be arraigned next week.

According to a statement issued by police, two of the victim’s guns and about $14,000 worth of property still are missing.
