Afternoon storm knocks down trees around county

A strong storm system quickly slashed its way through the north and central parts of Butler County on Thursday evening, causing some reports of wires down.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said there were reports of winds up to 60 and 65 mph, heavy rain, thunderstorms and even some hail at about 5:30 p.m.

There were several reports of damage, including a power line down near the Red Apple store on Route 8 in Center Township, a tree on the road near Renick's Used Auto Parts in Clay Township, a tree down on Mack Road in Center Township, a tree down on Kern Road in Muddy Creek Township, a tree on Helmbold Avenue in Winfield Township and a tree falling into wires on Byers Road in Clay Township.

Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department said most of the incidents required little time to solve, but said they were inconvenient for residents.

“It (the storm) was short, but it did a lot of damage,” Campbell said.
