Pavilion restrooms stay open

Adams board makes decision

ADAMS TWP — The restroom in the community park’s three pavilions will remain open for the summer, which goes against the recommendation of the township parks and recreation committee.

The township supervisors Monday heard Dave Skomo, a parks and recreation committee member, list several recommendations from the committee, including the closing of the restrooms at the pavilion because of its secluded location in the large park.

Skomo said the committee wants to close that restroom because of potential safety issues.

Another committee member, Jacki Smathers, told supervisors May 11 that people who use wheelchairs found the portable toilets at the park difficult to navigate. Smathers also said mothers taking small children to the restroom had complained about the portable facilities.

She asked last month that the pavilion restrooms be opened for park users.

Supervisor Russ Ford argued last month that opening the pavilion restrooms would incur additional cleaning and maintenance costs, which would be paid by all taxpayers whether they use the park or not.

The supervisors voted to keep all three pavilion restrooms open until a problem arises or August, when the plan would be reviewed.

“With any vandalism, we will immediately close them,” Ford said.

In addition to the restrooms issue, Skomo shared with supervisors the parks committee’s other recommendations that included:

n The idea to install a synthetic ice rink, which could be used year round, be abandoned due to costs and replaced with a seasonal ice rink.

n The Forsythe one-room schoolhouse moved to the park be used for general purposes, such as meetings, instead of as a historical display of education.

n The township investigate the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and comply with it.

The supervisors did not take action on those recommendations.
