Coroner reports on skydiver

No sign of heart attack or stroke

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Ohio — A Butler County man killed Sunday afternoon in a skydiving accident south of Youngstown died of massive injuries to the head and upper body, the Mahoning County Coroner’s office announced Tuesday.

Robert P. McQuistion, 65, of Jefferson Township was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, where he was taken after making his maiden jump with a skydiving school in Mahoning County.

But conflicting reports soon emerged about the circumstances surrounding McQuistion’s death near the Petersburg Airport, the home base for Skydive Rick’s.

Kay Kuhns, the co-owner of the school, on Monday said McQuistion’s legs became tangled in a parachute after he jumped. He managed to deploy his reserve parachute, she recounted, but he still hit the ground too hard.

Witnesses, however, later told investigators that they believed McQuistion possibly suffered a heart attack or stroke that rendered him unconscious after his emergency chute deployed, the coroner’s office said.

An autopsy Tuesday found “no evidence” that McQuistion suffered a cardiovascular event or other medical emergency after jumping, according to a news release issued by the office of Mahoning County Coroner Dr. David Kennedy.

The autopsy report listed the cause of death as “blunt force trauma to the head, neck and torso.”

Authorities, meanwhile, said the accident about 1 p.m. Sunday remains under investigation by the coroner’s office, Springfield Township police and the Federal Aviation Administration.

McQuistion’s obituary is on Page 3.
