Incumbent supervisors prevail
BUFFALO TWP — Two incumbent supervisors defeated a challenger Tuesday who was arrested while on the campaign trail.
John Haven and Gary Risch Sr. defeated challenger Mike Oehling Jr. for two Republican nominations for supervisor.
Haven led all candidates with 277 votes, Risch received 256 and Oehling received 151. There were 9 Republican write-in votes cast.
Haven is the five-person board’s chairman and Risch is the vice chairman. If re-elected, Haven and Risch will serve six-year terms.
Risch said he has served on the board for 10 years and wants to continue serving the people of the township.
“I’m glad to keep serving the people,” he said.
He listed goals for the township as keeping taxes down and developing the Route 356 corridor.
Haven has been a supervisor for nine years.
He said he was happy to win the nomination, but was disappointed in a low turnout from the township’s voters.
“It’s a shame. I’d like for more people to get interested,” he said.
In one of the township’s precincts, only 14 percent of registered voters went to the polls, while 20 percent and 17 percent turned out in the other two, respectively.
“I’m pleased that I got the votes that I did get. I appreciate everyone who voted for me,” he said.
Haven said he hopes to continue work on the Freeport Trail, which recently received grant funding.
He also hopes to continue to push for the state to widen Route 356 to help with traffic congestion.
Oehling, 23, was arrested on May 3 after allegedly stealing a campaign sign of one his opponents and leading township police on a chase.
He was charged with assaulting a police officer, fleeing police, drunken driving, theft and released on an unsecured bond.
There were no Democrats on the primary ballot and 38 Democrat write-in votes were cast.
