Audubon Society lists awards, scholarships
BRADY TWP — The Bartramian Audubon Society announced its awards and scholarships for 2015 at Jennings Environmental Education Center May 11.
Jennings Center in Brady Township received the institutional award for conservation by a state park.
The Birdwatchers Store in Slippery Rock Township was recognized as both a full-service shop for bird enthusiasts and as an important hub for information and advice about nature topics.
Denise Chybrzynski, a teacher at South Butler Intermediate Elementary School in Saxonburg, was awarded a full scholarship to Educator's Week at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine.
Brendyn Baptiste of Butler, a student at Moniteau High School in West Sunbury, was the first winner of the Gene and Joanne Wilhelm Scholarship. The scholarship will fund his participation in the Coastal Maine Avian Studies Program for Teens at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine.
Becky Sheeler's property in West Liberty was recognized as a Certified Wildlife Sanctuary.
This Bartramian Audubon Society program designates private properties as rich, biodiverse habitats for animals and plants. Sheeler's property along Slippery Rock Creek becomes the 59th sanctuary in the area to be protected.
The Bartramian Audubon Society is the chapter of the National Audubon Society serving Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties.
