EC man plans Bag, Benefit Tournament
CALLERY — A day of fun for the community will help four families.
The annual Friends Helping Friends Bag and Benefit Tournament will be from 2 to 10 p.m. June 6 at the Callery Baseball Field on Center Street.
The event is organized by Friends Helping Friends, a group that holds events to raise money for families experiencing difficult circumstances.
Founder Todd Wearing described Friends Helping Friends as a Cranberry CUP-type entity that benefits families in the Mars and Seneca Valley school districts.
The June 6 event will include a beanbag toss tournament, pig roast, beer, iced tea, raffles, silent auctions and live bands.
Sign-ups for the tournament will be from 2 to 3 p.m., and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Wearing, an Evans City native and a Mars resident, hopes to raise $3,000 to $5,000 for each of the four benefactors. That includes funds from a spaghetti dinner in the fall.
Wearing said the four benefactors are:
• The family of the late Evans City Mayor Gary Foster, who died April 4 of kidney failure.
• Jessica Young of Cranberry Township, who has mitochondrial disease. The inherited chronic illness can require long hospital stays, feeding tubes, and heart surgeries and can cause organ failures.
• Frank Rice of Harmony, who was seriously injured in a motocross accident. Rice, who has no health insurance, is facing mounting medical bills.
n Matt Maloni of Mars, a man in his early 30s who underwent emergency triple bypass surgery and also is facing high medical bills.
Wearing said the family-friendly event is a favorite of those who do not participate in that day’s tournament, but they eat, socialize and enjoy the bands.
“Only about half of the people who attend play in the tournament,” Wearing said.
Last year, Friends Helping Friends raised nearly $15,000. Two families were given $5,000 each, and the rest went to food banks and to buy presents for children at Christmas.
Wearing said his group started nine years ago at his brother’s house, where a beanbag tournament was held to raise money for a friend who had cystic fibrosis.
“We raised $3,500 and paid the costs out of our own pockets,” Wearing said.
Corporate sponsorships also are being accepted for the June 6 tournament.
Wearing said players must be at least 16 years of age.
