SUV with camper rolls over on I-79, causes traffic delays
JACKSON TWP — No one was injured in a rollover accident Thursday on Interstate 79 that snarled traffic for several hours.
Fire crews were dispatched after 2 p.m. to the northbound lanes of the interstate at the 86-mile mark, just south of Zelienople, for the accident involving an SUV towing a camper.
The driver of the SUV told state police and fire officials that he began to lose control of the camper, which eventually rolled onto its side. The accident blocked both lanes of traffic, said Harmony Fire Chief Neal Nanna.
Because of the rollover, traffic was backed up to the weigh station in Cranberry Township, Nanna said. Vehicles were eventually allowed to pass the accident scene on the interstate’s berm.
Aggressive drivers trying to get through posed a concern for emergency personnel on the busy interstate.
“People were not paying attention and were just trying to get through,” Nanna said. “One lady almost hit my truck because she was looking at the crash and not the road.”
A flatbed truck eventually removed the camper, and the road was cleared about 5 p.m.
