More charges filed against former VFD treasurer
CHICORA — Two weeks after being arrested on charges she stole nearly $68,000 from a volunteer fire department, Jodie Lynn Undercuffler has been caught shoplifting $23 in merchandise from a borough store, authorities said.
Undercuffler, 37, of Jefferson Township is accused of stealing two hanging flower baskets on May 4 from the Friedman’s supermarket in Chicora, according to court documents. Each basket costs $10.99.
State police Tuesday charged Undercuffler with a summary count of retail theft.
The suspected petty theft is a far cry from the amount that state police charged her with taking between November 2013 and January 2015, when she was the treasurer for the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department.
Police said Undercuffler wrote checks to herself and two others by forging the signature of the fire department’s secretary.
Investigators allege she used bookkeeping tricks to hide the vast theft, which tallied $67,885, documents said.
She confessed to the crime, documents said, and admitted she used the ill-gotten money to pay for mounting bills at home. Police arrested her April 20.
District Judge Sue Haggerty of Saxonburg arraigned the suspect on felony charges of forgery, theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and access device fraud and a misdemeanor charge of tampering with records.
Appearing without an attorney, Undercuffler on May 6 gave up her right to a preliminary hearing at Haggerty’s office and waived those charges to court. She remains free on $75,000 unsecured bail.
A telephone call to her Wednesday was not returned.
