Mars mulls plan

Program aimed at teachers, technology

ADAMS TWP — Mars School District administrators are asking the school board for a one-year commitment to a new program that would ensure all teachers have the same level of proficiency on the district’s instructional technology.

Elizabeth McMahon, assistant superintendent for elementary education, told the board Tuesday night that in the program, five teachers would be pulled from their classrooms to serve as technology coordinators for each of the district’s five school buildings.

The three elementary and two secondary teachers would work with McMahon and Matt Friedman, assistant superintendent for secondary education, and Jeff Bitzer, the district’s director of technology, to move faculty from their current use of instructional technology to a level where all teachers have a consistent understanding of and proficiency in the technology.

“We have a lot of money invested in technology,” said McMahon. “What do we have invested in professional development on it?”

She said the only cost to the district would be the long-term substitute teachers required to replace the five teachers in their classrooms.

The program would start with a survey for all teachers to assess their use of the technology.

The technology coordinators would then provide the teachers with any necessary training, and another survey would be done in January to determine the direction the program would need to take.

“This is a need and a priority, and if we are going to maximize our investment, we have to make sure our teachers utilize the tools available to them to best of their ability,” said Dayle Ferguson, board president. The board did not take action on the program on Tuesday night.
