LATROBE — Alex Scialabba and Matt Kenyon, both of Butler, were elected as class officers and members of the Student Government Association at Saint Vincent College.

Scialabba was elected as senior class president.

Kenyon was elected as junior class president.

They will serve until the end of the spring 2016 semester.

LATROBE — Samantha Angely of Freeport received an A.J. Palumbo Student Research Endowment Fund Award at Saint Vincent College.

INDIANA, Pa. — Allison Bogdan, an early childhood and special education major at Indiana (Pa.) University, was selected for an Addison Gibson Foundation Scholarship.

She was chosen for the scholarship on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Bogdan is a dean’s list student with a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi international education honor society, the IUP National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the IUP Pre-Service Teachers of Mathematics.

She is a 2013 graduate of Seneca Valley High School and the daughter of Joseph Bogdan of Cranberry Township and Mary Lou Bogdan of Harmony.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Jarrod Ellenberger of Karns City and Vincent Gray of Butler were honored at the first Honors College Recognition Ceremony at Youngstown State University. The event celebrated them for their accomplishments in honors at YSU.

Ellenberger, a mechanical engineering major, received the Freshman Certificate award.

Gray, a chemical engineering major, also received the Freshman Certificate award.

Their membership in the Honors College indicates a commitment to academic and professional preparation focused on engagement, interdisciplinary perspectives, leadership, research and scholarship and global citizenship.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Alex Bark of Zelienople received the Albert D. Caldrone Scholarship at Youngstown State University during the College of Creative Arts and Communication Honors Convocation.

Bark is a sophomore and a music education major.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Jordan Macey of Mars was honored at Youngstown State University’s annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet.

He was recognized as a scholar athlete for his academic achievements.

Macey is a member of the softball team and is majoring in middle child education.

PITTSBURGH — WQED announced Makenna Hilliard, a kindergarten student at Emily Brittain Elementary School, as a finalist in WQED’s 2015 PBS KIDS Writers Contest.

Her story, “The Monster Who Scared People,” was selected as one of 16 finalists from more than 800 stories received from throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey.

From May 9 to 16 the public can vote for the Kid’s Public Choice Winner at WQED’s Writers Contest page, www.writeonkids.org.

Winners of WQED’s Writers Contest will be announced May 17 and will advance to the national contest.

PENN TWP — Penn Christian Academy hosted the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Math Olympics. Nine schools participated in the competition and Penn Christian Academy students won 11 ribbons.

Nicole Collins of Butler won fourth place in sixth grade computation.

Kelli Jancay of Butler won fourth place and Jacob Cross of Penn Township won second place in the sixth grade reasoning competition.

Isaac Busler of Butler won third place and Dathan Gillis of Penn Township won first place in fifth grade computation.

Nathan Glassic of Butler won fifth place and Lauren Miko of Cranberry Township won third place in the fifth grade reasoning competition.

Joshua Boettner and Nick Burlingham, both of Butler, tied for fifth place in the fourth grade computation competition.

Riley Gillis of Penn Township won second place in third grade computation.

Julia Bianchin of Butler won first place in the third grade reasoning competition.

JACKSON TWP — This year’s Television and Video Teachers Student Video Festival at Robert Morris University attracted entries from 24 schools in the tri-state area.

Seneca Valley SVTV students took home five festival awards.

The winners included Alex Collinger for documentary, Brenden Celender for highlight tape, Patrick O’Shea for public service announcement and recent graduate Dillan Hodak for computer-generated graphics.

Sammy Hochberg won first place in the student-judged category, stop motion.
