KC likely to changeits grading scale
KARNS CITY — The Karns City School District likely will change its grading scale this fall, following suit to what the Moniteau School District recently approved for Moniteau High School.
The current grading scale at Karns City is “A” for 92 percent and above, “B” for 84 to 91 percent, “C” for 70 to 83 percent, “D” for 60 to 69 percent and “F” for 60 percent and below.
School board members discussed the possibility of changing that scale. A new scale would be 90 percent and up for an “A”, 80 to 89 percent for a “B”, 70 to 79 for a “C”, 60 to 69 percent for a “D,” and a failing grade below 60 percent.
“We felt it was appropriate to give students more opportunities to be successful and to be on a similar footing to surrounding school districts,” said Eric Ritzert, superintendent. “The driving force is predominantly with some of the curricular changes and the rigor in our curriculum.”
After Moniteau approved a grading scale change at the high school in February, Moniteau Principal Lance Fox said he thought it was the right decision.
“When our students compete against students from other districts for scholarships or academic awards, we want there to be an even playing field,” he said.
Butler and Seneca Valley school districts are among others in Butler County that have 90-80-70-60 grade scales.
The board will vote on changing the grading scale at its 8:30 p.m. meeting on May 11. Ritzert invited anyone in the district who has concerns about the potential policy to speak at the meeting.
“It does look like we will be making the change absent of people suggesting we do not,” he said.
