Mars survives in 9 innings, 5-4
Matt Derouin scored on Luke Rouda’s sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning, lifting Mars to a 5-4 baseball victory over Freeport Monday afternoon at Swartz Field.
Niko Romano earned the win after striking out four and walking none in three innings of relief.
Zarek Simkovich added two singles, a double and one run batted in for the Planets (4-3, 2-0).

Slippery Rock 2, Oil City 0 — Dan Williams’ RBI-single in the top of the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie with the host Oilers as the Rockets prevailed on the road.
Jason Bennett came home on the base hit from Williams. Gunner Becker followed with a single that plated Jason Rockburn.
The offense made a winner out of Jake Arienzo, who struck out 11 and walked a pair in a complete game.
The victory improved the Rockets to 6-0 on the season.

Mars’ Josh Raymundo and Aaron Gruber advanced through the first two rounds of the Section 2-AAA Doubles Tournament with victories over Butler’s Cam Sedwick/Matt McMaster (10-1) and Henry May/Devin Fitz (10-3).
May and Fitz had defeated North Hills’ Ryan Balog/Jake Seiler (10-6) in the opening round.
Sedwick and McMaster won a qualifying round match over Knoch’s Martin Stasinka/Kenny Damits (10-1) before losing in the first round.
Softball
Kennedy DeMatteis singled twice and doubled while scoring three runs and driving in two in Moniteau’s 13-0, five-inning win over visiting A-C Valley.
DeMatteis also was the winning pitcher, striking out eight in four innings of work for the Warriors (6-1, 2-0).
Moniteau had defeated Redbank Valley 6-0 on Saturday. Kennedy DeMatteis allowed just three hits and struck out nine in the complete-game shutout.
Kristina DeMatteis added a single, double, two runs scored and two RBI. Alyssa Dailey singled twice and scored two runs.
