SRU's Messer collects 900th victory
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Slippery Rock University’s baseball team helped head coach Jeff Messer make history in the best way possible, with a sweep.
The Rock defeated West Chester in a doubleheader Sunday at Jack Russell Stadium, giving Messer his 900th and 901st career victories.
Messer is ranked eighth all-time among all active Division II head coaches in career victories and is 22nd all-time.
He’s second all-time for wins in Pennsylvania history, regardless of classification, ranking behind Temple University coach James Wilson, who finished with 1,034 in 46 seasons.
SRU (7-1) rallied from a four-run deficit in extra innings to win Game 1 against the Rams 9-8 before winning the nightcap 8-1.
Adam Urbania went 3-for-8 with four RBI, a stole base and the game-winning hit in the opener. Sophomore Logan Brown and senior Jake Nogalo also went 3-for-8 with Brown driving in a pair of runs and Nagalo scoring six times.
In Saturday action, The Rock edged Saginaw Valley State, 5-4, in 12 innings at Jack Russell Stadium. That marked SRU’s longest game since the 2009 season.
Urbania doubled down the right field line to open the 12th and scored the winning run on Alex Bell’s single. Bell’s hit was his fourth of the game.
Tyler Walters had three hits as the freshman catcher is hitting .562 so far this spring. Brown had three hits as well.
Softball
The Rock split four games while opening its season in Clermont, Fla., over the weekend.
SRU dropped a 3-1 decision to Tiffin on Sunday before defeating Mercy College, 4-2. Stacey Herzog had a triple and scored two runs on the day while Alaynna Beers had a triple and single.
Freshman pitcher Brooke Dawson earned her second win, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Dawson defeated Notre Dame College, 7-1, on Saturday, striking out seven and allowing just two hits in six innings.
Butler graduate Caitlin Baxter had two hits and three RBI Saturday while Katie Kaiser delivered three hits and scored three runs.
Urbana defeated The Rock, 7-5, earlier Saturday.
Tennis
The Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team split a pair of matches Sunday in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Rock lost 7-0 to Division I USC-Upstate before beating PSAC rival Kutztown 9-0.
SRU (2-4) won a match by default against the Golden Bears, who had only five active players.
