Daryl Davis

Daryl M. “Red” Davis, 82, of Airport Road, Emlenton, a retired Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School teacher and well-known area lay minister, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening at his home while surrounded by his loving family.

Red was born in Sheakleyville, Mercer County, on Nov. 16, 1932. He was the son of the late J. Daryl and Mary Wilson Davis.

He was a 1950 graduate of Harrisville High School. Red was a talented athlete and attended Colorado State University in Greeley, Colo., on a baseball scholarship. He graduated in 1957 with a business degree from Grove City College and earned his teaching credentials from Geneva College in 1962.

Mr. Davis taught business and history at Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School in Foxburg for more than 30 years, retiring in 1993. He also coached junior high basketball at A-C Valley for 18 years.

Red was a devoted Christian and an active member of the Bethany Crossroads Evangelical Congregational Church in Knox. He had been a Sunday School teacher at the Bethany Crossroads E.C. Church and the Old Zion United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

He was a longtime member of the Men's Prayer Breakfast at the Emlenton Truck Plaza and had served as coordinator of the Prayer Breakfast for many years. He was a member and past president of Men with Vision in Southeast Venango County. He served on the board of directors for the Western Pennsylvania Bible Conference and was a member of Gideons International and participated in the Venango County Prison Ministry. He traveled on mission work teams for building projects in Paraguay, Budapest and Ukraine.

Red enjoyed working around his home and was an avid reader of the scriptures and history.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Joan E. Hogue Davis, who he married on Aug. 30, 1957, in Harrisville.

Also surviving are his three children, G. Scott Davis and his wife, Lisa, of Van Alstyne, Texas, Karen Davis of Grove City and GySgt. Stephen Davis USMC, ret., and his wife, Jennifer, of Ridgeland, S.C.; his four grandchildren, Matt, Mark, Zachary and Alyssa Davis, all of Van Alstyne, Texas; his four brothers, Walt Davis and his wife, Joan, of Maggie Valley, N.C., Glenn Davis and his wife, Clarice, of Estes Park, Colo., Jim Davis and his wife, Marlene, of Hot Springs, Ark., and Ralph Davis and his wife, Barbara, of Columbia, S.C.; his sister-in-law, Betty Hoffman and her husband, Fred, of Barkeyville; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Davis — The friends of Daryl M. “Red” Davis, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Hile Funeral Home, 1204 Kerr Ave., Emlenton, and from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bethany Crossroads Evangelical Congregational Church, 721 Crossroads Church Drive, Emlenton, with the Rev. Chris Lewis, church pastor, officiating.Military honors will be accorded at the church by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard of Franklin.
