SV seniors earn scholarships
JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley High School seniors Mitch Weaver and Haley Hoss received two of only three scholarships available from Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 5.
Mitch and Haley plan to major in music education in college.
The scholarships are based on the student’s academic success, musical achievement, involvement in PMEA festivals and their goals in music education.
Mitch is a member of the Seneca Valley Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, all-school musical Loft Band and Seneca Valley Marching Band. He also is a member of the River City Youth Brass Band.
Haley is a member of the Seneca Valley Concert Choir, Madrigals, Girls Chorus, all-school musical and Beautyshop Quartet. She attended the PMEA national conference in 2014.
PMEA District 5 includes school districts in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

Haine students head to nationals
JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Academic Games Team recently participated in the LinguiSHTIK tournament at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. LinguiSHTIK challenges players to improve grammar, vocabulary, spelling and writing skills.
The Haine Middle School team finished in the top five spots and had 18 national qualifiers, including five perfect scores.
The first place team was Dora White, Matt Murphy, Renhan Xu, Dilini Ranaweera and Brendan Malloy.
The second place team was Zach Garcia, Anoop Savio, Arya Nayak, Cameron Ailes and Ryan Jones.
The third place team was Jacklyn Ko, Ananya Rao, Emma Krebler, Jason Hartenstein and Zack LaValle.
The fourth place team was Brenna Wrubel, Vibha Hodachalli, Claire Reynolds, Sarah McKinley and Lauren Ehret.
The fifth place team was Parker Logue, Simren Jayaraman, Nick Folino, Emma Montgomery and Megan Bablak.
Perfect scores were earned by Arya Nayak, Ryan Jones, Brendan Malloy, Nick Folino and Beniafer Sepai.
Other qualifiers were Zach Garcia, Cameron Ailes, Dora White, Matt Murphy, Renhan Xu, Dilini Ranaweera, Evan Howley, Jacklyn Ko, Ananya Rao, Zack LaValle, Brenna Wrubel, Sarah McKinley and Lauren Ehret.
Christian Williams from Evans City Middle School was also a national qualifier.
The Seneca Valley Middle School team placed in second and third. Rachel Covell, Ben Hess, Jarrett Johnston, Reema Kudtarkar, Vinya Ponugoti, Bailey Salameh and Jonathan Simoes also qualified for nationals.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Amy Achenbach of Butler participated in an internship at the Alliance Chamber of Commerce during the fall 2014 semester at the University of Mount Union.
She was commissioned by the chamber to sort historical documents to use for the 100th anniversary celebration of the organization.
