Goodell seeks truth in Deflate-gate probe
PHOENIX — No apologies.
A Super Bowl Week that began with Patriots owner Robert Kraft demanding an apology from the NFL if it cannot prove that his team broke rules in using deflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game ended with Roger Goodell offering no hint of one while the investigation into the matter continues.
“This is my job,” the NFL commissioner said on Friday. “This is my responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. I represent 32 teams. All of us want to make sure that the rules are being followed and if we have any information where the potential is that those rules were violated, I have to pursue that and I have to pursue that aggressively. This is my job. This is the job of the league office. We will do it vigorously.”
The investigation into the deflated footballs was the main narrative in Goodell’s annual address and press conference with the media. He reiterated what the league said in a statement last Friday, that the investigation is focused on answering two questions:
Why were some footballs that were used in the game not compliant with the rules? And was this the result of a deliberate action?
“I want to emphasize we have made no judgments on these points and we will not compromise the investigation by making any speculation,” he said. “When (NFL outside investigator) Ted Wells has completed his investigation and made his determination based on all relative evidence, we will share his report publicly.”
Goodell’s close relationship with Kraft has been called into question, most notably by Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.
“It’s not unusual that I work very closely with ownership, particularly someone like Robert Kraft who serves on numerous committees,” Goodell said. “I also admire, respect and think very highly of him on a personal level. There is no hiding from that standpoint. But since he knows me so well and he knows I am not going to do anything to compromise the integrity of the league, I think he has no doubt that I will do the right thing for the NFL.”
