Roof change order OK'd; county wants reimbursed

The Butler County commissioners on Wednesday approved a $50,504 change order to the new office building construction project.

The work included the installation of tapered roof insulation and a new rubber top to the four-level building along South Washington Street.

An error occurred during construction when steel beams and metal sheets for the roof were fabricated and installed flat instead of sloped to drain rainwater into gutters.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, reiterated the county would seek reimbursement for the added cost.

“We know the county’s not responsible,” McCarrier said.

He said between the contractor, architect and construction manager, the mix-up occurred.

“That’s what we’re trying to sort through,” McCarrier said.

The nearly $12 million project is scheduled to be done in August. The new building will house county human services.

Park funding

Evans City Mayor Dean Zinkhann told the commissioners some of the natural gas drilling impact fee money given to the county should be forwarded to his borough.

Zinkhann said the borough park and pool need refurbished.

According to Zinkhann, children are shedding tears because they can’t use the recreational facilities.

Commissioner Jim Eckstein agreed the county should allocate some of its impact fee money to such municipal needs.

Borough resident Kris Leighty also said it was heartbreaking to see the park in disrepair.

McCarrier said the board considers every request for funding.

Bridge project

The commissioners awarded a $44,036 contract to Mack Industries of Vienna, Ohio, for an abutment system included in the Iron City Bridge replacement project on Market Street in Zelienople.
