Snowy road is factor in Adams Twp. crash

ADAMS TWP — A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday after being trapped in her SUV following an accident.

Mary Russell, 49, of Pittsburgh was driving a Chevrolet Equinox north on Myoma Road toward Mars-Evans City Road about 1 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, said Adams Police Chief William Westerman.

The SUV collided with a Honda Civic traveling the opposite direction and slid into a ravine where it landed on its side. The roads were wet from snow, which was a factor in the crash.

“She came down around the S-bend and went sideways into the vehicle coming the other way,” Westerman said.

The driver of the Honda was not hurt and was able to drive away following the collision.

Firefighters found Russell conscious and alert, but unable to get out of the vehicle, said Curt Huffman, chief of the Callery Volunteer Fire Department.

Rescuers spent about 20 minutes removing the front windshield so they could free Russell. She was taken by Quality EMS to Allegheny General Hospital after complaining of back and facial pain, Westerman said.

Russell was determined to be at fault in the accident, Westerman said.

She was ticketed for driving at an unsafe speed and for tires and equipment because the car’s tires did not have enough tread and the vehicle inspection was expired.

After Russell was removed from the vehicle, the Adams Fire District and Callery departments cleared the area with chainsaws so the vehicle could be pulled out and towed away.

That stretch of road was closed for about an hour as responders worked to remove the vehicle and clean up the scene.
