Metcalfe pushing to impeach AG Kane
HARRISBURG — A new session of the General Assembly will start in January and state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe again will take up his effort to impeach Attorney General Kathleen Kane.
Metcalfe, R-12th, submitted a similar resolution earlier this year that failed to come to a vote on the floor. Metcalfe said he plans on reintroducing the legislation as soon as he can in the new session.
He's eager to do so, Metcalfe said, because Kane has only gotten worse at her job and continues to display a “pattern of abuse” in the attorney general's position.
Among his biggest concerns are the fact that Kane refused to defend the state in a challenge to its gay marriage ban, while she also refused to prosecute several Democratic legislators from Philadelphia who were allegedly caught taking bribes.
Kane has shown a “blatant disregard and disrespect” for Pennsylvania law, he said, by refusing to defend state law against legal challenges.
“We've just seen her behavior in office, a pattern of abuse,” Metcalfe said. “We need a chief law enforcement officer who actually abides by the law.”
Metcalfe said he's circulating a memorandum in the Legislature asking for co-sponsors for his impeachment resolution.
That resolution already has more support than it did last year, Metcalfe said, and he expects the issue to gain momentum.
“I've actually been contacted by colleagues who're encouraging me to move in this direction,” he said.
“You're going to see more support moving in to this new session with the growing evidence that this attorney general has no regard for the law, and that her behavior merits removal from office.”
The new legislative session starts on Jan. 6.
