Firefighters douse house blaze before it can spread
Firefighters Tuesday morning extinguished a blaze before it could spread throughout a Second Street duplex.
Butler Fire Chief Nick Ban said the fire started in the downstairs hallway that leads to both apartments.
None of the six people in the ranch-style house at 222 and 224 Second St. were injured.
Ban said a couple with a baby occupy the apartment at 224 while a woman and her two teenage children live at 222. The tenants’ names were unavailable.
The man living in 224 was at work while all the other tenants were in the building.
A friend of the couple also was inside.
Ban said his crew doused the fire within five minutes.
“The guys had a quick takedown,” he said.
Ban estimated damages at $10,000. The tenants and the owner, Chuck Thomas, are insured.
Ban called in a state police fire marshal to determine a cause for the fire.
“The fire’s origin is unknown at this time,” he said Tuesday.
Ban said there were no utilities in the area where the fire ignited.
Along with five city firefighters, several VA Butler Healthcare firefighters responded to the 9:09 a.m. 911 call.
Crews cleared the scene at 10:12 a.m.
