Man allegedly drove drunk
A Butler man was drunk and texting on his cell phone when he crashed into another vehicle earlier this year, badly injuring the other driver, authorities said.
Butler police on Tuesday arrested 26-year-old Corey M. Simon on felony and other charges, alleging that he was nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol just before 4 p.m. Oct. 5 when his pickup truck crossed the center line on East Jefferson Street and slammed into a sport utility vehicle.
The wreck left Shirley Young, 48, trapped with numerous broken bones inside the SUV she was driving. Her 13-year-old son, a front seat passenger, managed to get out on his own.
The boy suffered minor injuries to his left arm, police said.
A medical helicopter eventually took Young to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of fractures to her left leg, right ankle and both arms, according to court documents.
Simon suffered unspecified injuries and by the time officers could speak to him about the accident, an ambulance had already taken him to Butler Memorial Hospital.
The Butler Ambulance Service crew that initially tended to him told police he smelled of alcohol.
About 20 minutes after the wreck, police interviewed Simon, who admitted drinking four beers that day, documents said.
“Simon stated the accident was caused due to his impairment from the alcohol and texting on his cellular phone while he was operating the vehicle,” a police affidavit said.
Toxicology reports subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.156 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
Simon was arraigned on a felony charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence. He also is charged with DUI and reckless driving.
He was placed in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment. A preliminary hearing is set for March 16.
