SRU starts time capsule to mark 125th anniversary
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s 125th anniversary is drawing to a close.
On Thursday, SRU marked the beginning of the end of its yearlong celebration by starting a time capsule. Several SRU staff, faculty, students and trustees placed items in the capsule.
After Dec. 13’s commencement ceremony, the commencement program will be placed in the capsule, and the capsule will be sealed.
The capsule will be placed in a Plexiglas case and will be put on display in the third floor of the Robert M. Smith Student Center.
It will be opened in 2039, 25 years from now.
SRU President Cheryl Norton said 2014 was a great year.
“We’ve had fun, relived memorable events and created new memories and traditions,” Norton said.
Norton left a letter from her to whomever the president is in 2039, a snowglobe that was created for the celebration’s kickoff ceremony and a booklet detailing all of SRU’s principals and presidents since its founding in 1889.
Tom Breth, chairman of the SRU council of trustees, left a bookmark noting the achievements of SRU during the past year and also left a pin recognizing SRU as an “outstanding place to work.”
“Let’s hope when the time capsule is opened that SRU will still be a great place to work,” Breth said.
Other items placed included a letter from SGA President Katie Hill to the SGA president in 2039, a letter from the current faculty to the faculty in 2039, a patch worn by student athletes this year denoting the anniversary, a DVD made by SRU students showing the community picnic held in June and a foam hand with “Go Rock” printed on it.
Members of the SRU community can give other items for the time capsule to Laurel Dagnon, director of programming for SRU’s Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, by Wednesday.
SRU held several events this year in honor of the anniversary. It kicked off Jan. 30 with a grand march. A community picnic was held June 21. On Oct. 18, the SRU football team faced Mercyhurst at the University of Michigan.
