Man receives probation for role in fatal crash

A Butler man will serve nearly a year of probation for wrecking a vehicle in 2012 that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old Cabot girl.

Bryant Butler was 17 when the July 11 rollover crash occurred on Thompsontown Road in Clay Township. Alexis McKinney was a passenger in the Chevrolet Blazer that Butler was driving.

During a juvenile disposition hearing Wednesday, county President Judge Thomas Doerr ordered Butler to serve the probation for a count of homicide by vehicle.

Toxicology results indicated Butler’s blood-alcohol level was 0.208 percent, which is 10 times the legal limit for juveniles, or 0.02 percent, at the time of the wreck.

The blood test also found drugs in his system.

Doug Ritson, chief probation officer for the county, said Butler will be monitored by juvenile probation due to the accident happening when the driver was 17.

“He will be under supervision with us until his 21st birthday,” Ritson said in an interview.

Ritson said Butler will turn 21 in roughly 10 months.

Butler’s adjudication was delayed because he suffered a brain injury in the accident, leading to a lengthy recovery.

“He had some severe injuries,” Ritson said.

Following the accident, Butler was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

After several weeks, Butler was then moved to the Children’s Institute for rehabilitative therapy.
