Butler resident to direct 'Messiah'

Harry Cunningham of Butler will direct the New Castle Music Club Chorus when it presents Handel's “Messiah” at 3 p.m. Sunday.

NEW CASTLE — Butler resident Harry Cunningham will direct the New Castle Music Club Chorus when it presents Handel’s “Messiah” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 135 Decker Drive.

Cunningham retired as choral director in the Moniteau School District and is senior choir director at First English Lutheran Church in Butler.

Offering the beautiful tones of the flute for the sixth time with the chorus will be Butler resident Sharon Perschke, who has taught music for 25 years at St. Luke Lutheran School in Cabot and plays the flute as a substitute with the Butler County Symphony and Pittsburgh Philharmonic.

The Rev. James Dollhopf, retired pastor of Butler’s First English Lutheran Church and a longtime Butler resident, will participate in the tenor section of the chorus, as he has for many years.

Among the sponsors is the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Admission is free but donations will be accepted to help defray production costs.
