Warden says inmate found hanging is not in custody

He was taken to UPMC Presby

The Connoquenessing man who was found hanging in the Butler County Prison Thursday won’t be returning to the jail.

Warden Rick Shaffer said David A. Gaiser, 42, was released from prison custody later that night while at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

“I believe he was on life support,” Shaffer said.

Gaiser was released on his own recognizance. He was arrested Oct. 11 in connection with a break-in earlier that day in Connoquenessing Township.

The hospital would not confirm any information about Gaiser’s condition. Shaffer said once Gaiser was released, the prison no longer is entitled to receive updates about his health.

During a routine check around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, a corrections officer found Gaiser hanging by the neck from a bed sheet tied to the bunk in his cell.

Another corrections officer resuscitated Gaiser.

Shaffer lauded the prison staff’s efforts in saving Gaiser.

“It was a team effort, no doubt about it, between the nurses and the officers,” he said.

After being taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital, Gaiser was transferred to Presbyterian.

District Attorney Richard Goldinger said county detectives have not yet concluded the investigation into the incident.

“They’re still looking at it,” Goldinger said.
