Chicora man escapes snow

He spent 24 hours in Jeep

CHICORA — The massive snowfall that covered the Buffalo, N.Y., area with up to 6 feet of snow over the past two days trapped a Butler County man in his vehicle.

Twenty-three-year-old Bryce Foreback of Chicora spent 24 hours huddled in his Jeep Liberty, unable to get the quarter-mile to the Lackawanna, N.Y., toll booth off Interstate 90.

Foreback was on his way to visit his sister in Waterloo, N.Y., when he became stuck about 10:30 p.m. Monday, just south of Buffalo.

Foreback’s mother, Valerie Foreback of Chicora, said her son was stuck with more than a dozen other motorists until late Tuesday night after a storm dumped about 4 feet of snow on the region.

“It was awful,” she said. “It was quite the ordeal. My nerves are still shot.”

Valerie Foreback said her son was en route to visit his sister, Kiersten Foreback.

Bryce Foreback spent all of those hours, waiting for crews to respond and plow the roads.

“It seemed like a nightmare. It just didn’t feel like it was going to end,” Bryce Foreback told The Associated Press by cell phone.

Valerie Foreback said her son was able to get going late Tuesday night and made it off the interstate before running out of gas. His sister battled the storm and was able to pick him up early Wednesday morning. Waterloo, under normal driving conditions, is about an hour and 45 minutes away from where Bryce Foreback was stranded.

The two are safe at Kiersten Foreback’s apartment, their mother said.

“I’m glad it’s over,” she said.

She said her son was still asleep this morning.

Valerie Foreback spent the entire day Tuesday making calls to state police in New York, as well as the governor’s office and the National Guard.

She said her son saw two state police officers on snowmobiles drive by the group of stranded motorists during the 24-hour stretch, but they did not stop.

“It’s amazing that nobody could stop to help them or let them know what is happening,” she said.

Valerie Foreback said her son was awake for more than 30 hours at one point.

The mother said she is happy her son is safe.

“I don’t think he will be traveling to New York again anytime soon,” she said.
