Christie tours sites hit hard

HACKENSACK, N.J.-Gov. Chris Christie marked the second anniversary of Superstorm Sandy on Wednesday with a daylong tour of once-devastated towns, meeting with volunteers and local officials who praised him for his recovery efforts and facing protesters angry about work still to be done.

Christie gave A grades to the long-term response by non-governmental agencies, even as many residents — and some elected officials holding their own anniversary events — said aid programs have fallen short and far too many remain homeless.

One of those protesters confronted Christie and drew a sharp rebuke from the governor, who told him, “I’m glad you had your day to show off, but we’re the ones here to actually do the work.”

Jim Keady of Spring Lake stood in a crowd during the event in the downtown section of Belmar and repeatedly spoke over the governor as he was addressing people gathered for the anniversary event.

“I’ve been here when the cameras weren’t here and did the work,” Christie said to Keady as he was being led away by police.

The storm hit New Jersey Oct. 29, 2012, and was the largest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Ocean. It killed 37 people in New Jersey, damaged thousands of homes and businesses, and left 7 million residents without power.
