SPOTLIGHT NORTH IN BRIEF

SLIPPERY ROCK — A new documentary, “Macoskey's ALTER: Missionaries of Sustainability,” outlining the late Slippery Rock University Professor Robert Macoskey's vision of increased sustainability, will premiere at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Robert Smith Student Center. A panel discussion will follow.

Benjamin Beers, an SRU sustainable management major from Butler; Doug Drew, a communication major from Grove City; and Arthur Link III, a sustainable management major from Slippery Rock, wrote, directed and produced the 25-minute documentary.

Macoskey was a veteran professor of philosophy who conceived SRU's Harmony House and what has grown into the center for sustainability.

He helped initiate and launch the university's award-winning sustainability efforts before his 1990 death.

SLIPPERY ROCK — “Race, Gender and the Power of Language in Hip-Hop” will be topics when Jasiri X, a community activist, lectures at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Slippery Rock University.The free program will be in the Robert Smith Student Center ballroom.Jasiri X's program examines the belief that hip-hop is a powerful means to influence a diverse cross-section of the American population.His session at SRU will explore how language can be used to improve self-image, dispel stereotypes and provide a positive forum of self-expression while examining the power it has to shape the way society views “reality.”The event will include a performance by Jasiri X and other 1Hood artists.His hit song “Free the Jena 6” aired on more than 100 radio stations and was named Hip-Hop Political Song of the Year.His debut album, “American History X,” was named Album of the Year at the Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards.Notices should be received by the Eagle a week before the event.
