Pgh. man allegedly burns girlfriend with hot knife

He's charged with felony assault

A Pittsburgh man is accused of burning his girlfriend with a red hot knife during a domestic dispute early Thursday at the woman’s home in Butler.

James B. Byers, 35, allegedly heated the large kitchen knife on the stove and held it on Tiffany Schramm’s back. She suffered a burn mark on her back “consistent with the shape of the knife,” Butler police said.

Police arrested Byers at Schramm’s home in the 300 block of First Street following the attack that started about 1 a.m.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned the defendant on charges of felony and misdemeanor assault and terroristic threats. He is in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Police were called about 1:30 a.m. after the 35-year-old Schramm ran to a neighbor’s house and pounded on the door, calling for help.

The neighbor told officers that the woman was “yelling something about being burned with a knife,” according to a police affidavit.

Police got there and found Schramm with assorted injuries including redness, swelling and bruising to her nose and right eye. She was bleeding around the right eye and lips, and she had a burn mark on her lower back.

Schramm told police that after she and Byers got into an argument, the defendant hit her in the face several times and kicked her in the side.

Her boyfriend at some point heated up the knife and burned her, charging documents said.

During the attack, he allegedly held the knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.

Officers found Byers on the second floor. They recovered the knife in an upstairs bedroom.

The knife was “discolored and it appeared to have been heated up,” the affidavit said.
