CLAY TWP — Two men were hurt Thursday evening when they crashed on the same bike jump at an off-road dirt bike track, authorities said.

The wreck at the Switchback Raceway on Route 8 was the second in consecutive days.

On Wednesday evening, an 18-year-old rider suffered a serious head injury, and was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The latest accident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. when an unidentified man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, lost control of his cycle on a jump at the motocross track.

“The motorcycle went up the hill, and he went airborne over the hill,” said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department this morning. “He landed on the other side of the hill.”

Moments later, another cyclist took the jump, landing his bike on the fallen rider and crashing. Both men were wearing helmets.

The first rider suffered the more serious injuries. The first call to the 911 center reported he was experiencing “a lung problem,” said Steve Bicehouse, director of county emergency services, this morning.

It turned out his injuries included a broken arm, a fractured collarbone and broken ribs, Campbell said.

The other rider, who also was not identified, complained of abdominal pain, authorities said. The extent of his injuries were not known.

Both men were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment

Telephone calls to Switchback were not returned this morning.
