Drill impact topic
HARMONY — The borough will host a presentation on the environmental impact of Marcellus shale gas drilling at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Harmony Museum.
Jim Daley, director of environmental services for the engineering firm Novel Geo-Environmental, will speak about shale development and measures taken to protect watersheds.
Daley said he was requested as a speaker through the Marcellus Shale Coalition. Novel Geo-Environmental is based in Moon Township, Allegheny County.
“It’s basically Marcellus Shale 101,” he said of his talk.
Though the borough has ordinances prohibiting drilling pads and pipelines, residents should still be concerned about the potential effects of gas drilling on the watershed, Council President Jim Hulings said.
“Anything to do with Marcellus shale drilling in our area, we should learn as much as we can,” Hulings said.
The borough plans to work with the state Department of Environmental Protection in the future to document any potential sources of water contamination in the watershed.
Any spills could get into the groundwater and end up in Connoquenessing Creek, which residents should be concerned about, Hulings added.
