Knoch prom crowning part of film

A photograph of Alex Weber of Butler being crowned prom king at Knoch High School in May will be part of the National Down Syndrome Society's annual video.

As if being prom king wasn't enough of a crowning achievement for Alex Weber's farewell to Knoch High School, now the event has brought more magic.

A photograph of Alex being crowned by classmates has been selected to be included in the National Down Syndrome Society's (NDSS) annual Times Square video presentation.

The 45-minute video will debut in the heart of New York City's famous square Sept. 20, and will kick off the foundation's annual Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October.

The organization said it received more than 2,000 applicants from around the world and selected about 220.

According to the organization, the photographs highlight children, teens and adults with Down Syndrome “working, playing and learning alongside friends and family. The collective images promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome, which is the NDSS mission.”

Alex's mother, Chris Weber had saved the photograph, taken by a classmate, from a Butler Eagle article. She saw the contest and said, “I thought let's try this. This photo really warms my heart.”

Weber said it's still undecided if the family will travel to New York City to see the video. The organization has said the video will be available later on YouTube.

Meantime, since high school graduation Alex has been working at the Freedom Farm bakery and farm market and swimming with his friends and cousins. He also has appeared on the television show that documents the same farm: “Farm Kings.”

“His summer is going very well,” Weber said.
