4th fireworks need funding
Butler will present a fireworks show on the Fourth of July. Now city council just hopes it can raise the money to pay for it.
The city will vote Thursday night on an agreement with Zambelli Fireworks to put on an $11,000 show at Kelly Automotive Park on the holiday.
But Mayor Tom Donaldson said at the council meeting Tuesday night that the city hasn’t raised the money for the show yet.
“We still have a ways to go,” he told council of the fundraising efforts. But he did not say how much has been raised at this point.
The city is seeking donations from residents and businesses to pay for the attraction, which will follow a Butler BlueSox baseball game and a concert put on by the club.
Donaldson said the city would find a way to pay for the event regardless of how successful its fundraising efforts become.
“If we don’t come up with the money, the city will find a way to cover it,” he said.
Donaldson said it is important for the city to host the show to demonstrate its patriotism.
“It’s the country’s birthday,” he said. “People expect it.”
However, the city will not get support from Butler Township.
Council said the Butler Township Commissioners on Monday night declined the mayor’s request to help fund the show, citing a tight budget.
“The township turned us down,” Donaldson said.
The mayor sent the township a letter requesting assistance for the show.
Councilwoman Cheri Scott said each of the council members needs to actively recruit donations for the event.
The Butler BlueSox also will host a fireworks night July 5. That show is expected to be smaller than the $11,000 performance paid for by the city.
The BlueSox are scheduled to host eight fireworks nights at the ballpark this season.
The city put on a similar sized show last year, when former Mayor Maggie Stock personally paid for part of that bill.
