Help needed for cleanup

EVANS CITY — Borough officials will clean up the streets Saturday morning, and they hope residents will pitch in.

Councilman John McKinney said the borough will participate in Keep America Beautiful, a state Department of Transportation program in which the department gives boroughs and townships the equipment they need to pick up debris on streets, highways and roads.

The cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

McKinney said residents and business owners who want to help can come to the borough building adjacent to the library at 8 a.m. Saturday. They will receive a reflective vest, gloves and heavy duty trash bags, plus a route in the one square-mile borough where they can pick up trash.

Saturday marks the first time the borough has participated in the program, and McKinney hopes it proves successful.

He said it will spruce up the borough and make the community safer for those who walk along the streets and road.

Because the PennDOT guidelines require that state roads must be cleaned first, McKinney said Route 68 and Washington Street will be the first to be tackled.

He said workers will pick up trash on Route 68 from Skander Tire Service to Route 528, and for three miles on Washington Street from the VFW to John’s Bar.

After those two roads are finished, workers will pick up the debris on the streets criss-crossing the borough.

“I hope it all works out,” McKinney said. “This is the first time I’ve done this.”

He said the Evans City Lions and Rotary clubs are expected to supply members, and four scouting troops have been invited to help.

Council President and Rotarian Lee Dyer said he hopes residents will turn out to help beautify their town.

“The community would benefit as a whole in the spirit of helping each other,” Dyer said. “Plus people driving through town and seeing us take pride in our community will be very important.”

He hopes the event will prompt home and business owners to spruce up their own properties.
