Board makes hire

Assistant super. gets 5-year deal

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board Monday hired a new assistant superintendent of elementary education.

Mary Wolf was approved with a five-year contract beginning July 1 at an initial salary of $120,000 a year. While her appointment was unanimous, members Bill Halle and Jim Keffalas voted against her contract terms.

Member John Conrad said the split vote is because of a disagreement in pay. Before the vote, he said some members of the board wanted to pay her less.

Wolf is the principal at Clarion-Limestone Elementary School in Clarion County.

She received her doctorate in educational leadership from Indiana (Pa.) University, and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clarion University.

She will replace Carolyn Cornish, who retires in June.

Contract revision

In a 6-3 vote, the board approved the revised terms of a one-year teacher contract extension for the 2014-15 school year. While the contract was originally approved in 2011, the new terms were negotiated with the Butler Education Association.

The salary schedule will remain the same and extend from the current contract. But business manager Cathy Rodgers said that staff members on step 19, those who have worked in the district for 19 years or more, will not have a pay raise in the coming school year under this salary schedule. As of the beginning of this school year there were 139 staff members on step 19. About 500 staff are included in the contract extension.

Halle, Keffalas and Neil Convery voted against the measure.

Pay to play

During the board’s athletic committee meeting, before the board meeting, members were given information about pay to play scenarios for students, particularly referencing discussions the board has had in past years. Athletic director Bill Mylan said such a policy could yield $75,000 to $90,000 a year for the district.

Sports facility

Board members also continued discussing the possibility of an on-campus indoor sports facility with Matt Clement and Daryl Patten during the committee meeting. The board told Clement and Patten to come back with more detailed agreement terms.

The board also:

n Approved roofing projects at Butler High School and at McQuistion Elementary School. Project costs are $653,410 at McQuistion, $369,920 for the 100 wing and ramp at the back of the high school building, and $309,170 for the high school gymnasium roof. The work will be done by N.F. Mansuetto & Sons of Martins Ferry, Ohio. Projects will be done over the summer.

n Revised the smoking policy from banning all tobacco products to banning all nicotine products. This includes electronic cigarettes.
