Caitlin Cobern

Pittsburgh — The Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) honored Caitlin Cobern, Emily Petrak and Carolyn Shetter with its College Chemistry Awards. The awards recognize their demonstrated excellence in performance and high achievements in chemistry.

The three are senior chemistry majors and were selected by faculty at their colleges.

Cobern attends West Virginia Wesleyan College and is the daughter of Charles and Cheryl Cobern.

Petrak attends Thiel College and is the daughter of Theresa Christon and Scott Petrak.

Shetter attends Allegheny College and is the daughter of Jocelyn and Thomas Shetter.

All are graduates of Butler High School. Cobern graduated in 2009. Petrak and Shetter graduated in 2010.

The award includes a monetary prize and a certificate. Monetary awards also will be given to libraries at each of the colleges. An engraved nameplate will be added to a plaque in each chemistry department listing prior SACP winners.

ARLINGTON, Va. — David Shipe, a senior at Freeport High School, was the first place winner and received a scholarship for his original scientific research in environmental science at the 52nd National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium sponsored by the Navy, Army and Air Force.Department of Defense (DOD) researchers honored David for his project, “Investigation of Aquatic Plants and Bacterial Solutions as Efficient Bio-filters to Remove Ammonia from Water.”He is the son of Peter and Nancy Shipe of South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County.More than 10,000 students and teachers from the United States, Puerto Rico and DOD schools in Europe and Asia participated in the competition.—–—Kathy Zacherl of Valencia was named as the outstanding graduating student in the human resource management master's degree program of La Roche College. She was selected by the program's faculty.Zacherl is a human resources associate analyst for Bayer in Robinson Township.—––ERIE — Rebecca Cratty, an interior design major, competed in the first Erie Collegiate Innovation Showcase representing Mercyhurst University. Cratty is from Evans City.Cratty's project, “OctaConnect Modular Student Housing,” is a multidimensional housing alternative to the bricks and mortar model of colleges and universities. The plug-and-live housing modules allow for customization, stack ability and easy mobility without sacrificing space efficiency and cost effectiveness.Cratty's senior thesis project also will be on display at Mercyhurst's Cummings Gallery.———FINDLAY, Ohio — Mathias Botti and Jared Kapustik, both of Sarver, Brandy Munsch and Cassandra Wolowic, both of Grove City, and Lauren Schaper of Mars received merit scholarships from the University of Findlay for the 2014-2015 academic year.The awards are based on a student's GPA and ACT/SAT scores and are renewable for up to four years.———ERIE — Mercyhurst University students Sara Chuzie of Grove City and Sarah Dennis of Cranberry Township are among 11 fashion merchandising majors who will live in New York City during their senior year while enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology's Visiting Student Program.Their internship industry experience will enable them to receive a one-year associate degree from F.I.T. when they receive their bachelor's degrees at Mercyhurst.———MARIETTA, Ohio — Rebecca Greenstein and Jacob Double were honored during the annual spring honors convocation at Marietta College.Greenstein, a junior from Cranberry Township, received the Hobba Chemistry Prize.Double, a senior from Evans City, received the SPE Outstanding Senior Award.—–—ANNVILLE, Pa. — Lauren Decker of Grove City was recognized for academic achievement with the Freshman Achievement Award in Chemistry at Lebanon Valley College.Decker is a graduate of Grove City High School. She is pursuing a bachelor's degree in health science.—–—MARIETTA, Ohio — Ryley Cowan of Sarver received a Greek Award for Outstanding New Member of the Year of the 2013-14 academic year at Marietta College.Cowan is a graduate of Freeport High School and majoring in petroleum engineering.
