Primary will have few competitive races

Redistricting to go into effect next year

Two state House districts in Butler County have competitive races in Tuesday’s primary while three other House seats have no races.

Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-10th; Rep. Brian Ellis, R-11th; and Rep. R. Lee James, R-64th, will be on Tuesday’s ballot, but they have no challengers.

Starting next year, many county residents will get different representatives because redistricting has caused House district boundaries to change this election cycle.

Altered House districts

The 8th District, represented by retiring Republican Dick Stevenson, in the county now will cover Brady, Center, Cherry, Clay, Franklin, Marion, Mercer, Muddy Creek and Worth townships, as well as Harrisville, Portersville, Prospect and West Sunbury.

It will lose Concord, Fairview, Jackson and Lancaster townships as well as Fairview, Harmony, Karns City, Petrolia, Prospect and Zelienople.

Three Republicans are running for their party’s nomination Tuesday. They are Tedd Nesbit, Jeff Black and Herman Bauer.

Ellis’ 11th District will cover Butler, Clearfield, Connoquenessing, Donegal, Fairview, Jefferson, Oakland and Summit townships as well as Butler, Chicora, Connoquenessing, East Butler, Fairview, Karns City, Petrolia, Prospect and Saxonburg.

It will lose Buffalo and Winfield townships.

The 12th District, represented by Republican Daryl Metcalfe, will cover Adams, Clinton, Cranberry, Forward, Middlesex and Penn townships, as well as Callery, Mars, Seven Fields and Valencia. It will lose Jefferson Township, Connoquenessing, Evans City and Saxonburg.

Metcalfe is unopposed on the GOP ballot on Tuesday but he faces a write-in challenge from Gordon Marburger.

James’ 64th District will add Concord Township. It also includes Allegheny, Parker, Venango and Washington townships as well as Bruin, Cherry Valley and Eau Claire in the county.

Same House district

In Butler County, Gibbons’ 10th District will stay the same, covering Slippery Rock borough and township.

2 new House Districts

The county will have two new state House districts.

Residents in Jackson and Lancaster townships as well as Evans City, Harmony and Zelienople will be a part of the 14th District covered by Republican Rep. Jim Marshall of Big Beaver.

Residents in Buffalo and Winfield townships will be a part of the 60th District, covered by Republican Rep. Jeff Pyle of Ford City.

However, neither Marshall nor Pyle are facing competition Tuesday.

New Senate seat

The county also will gain a new state senate district, the 47th District, represented by Sen. Elder Vogel of New Sewickley Township.

That district gained Jackson, Lancaster, Muddy Creek and Worth townships and Harmony, Portersville and Zelienople.

Vogel is not up for reelection.

Lost Senate seat

Three Republicans, state Rep. Michele Brooks of Jamestown, Mercer County; state Rep. Greg Lucas of Edinboro, Erie County; and Jane MacPherson of Hermitage, Mercer County; and one Democrat, Michael Muha of Hermitage, are vying for the 50th District seat in the state Senate.

State Sen. Bob Robbins is retiring.

However, the 50th District no longer is in the county. It used to cover Lancaster and Worth townships.

Republican Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st, and Republican Sen. Don White, R-41st, will continue to represent the county.
