Saxonburg selects new borough superintendent
SAXONBURG — A Saxonburg Area Authority employee now also works for the borough.
Charles McGee of Winfield Township on Tuesday accepted an offer to be the borough superintendent as well as the authority director of operations and assistant director of development.
He previously was the authority director of development.
His annual salary increases from $47,000 to $52,500. He also receives a $500 bonus from the authority.
McGee, 33, of Winfield Township said he was pleased both entities wanted him for the dual post.
“I appreciate the vote of confidence believing in me to do the job,” he said.
McGee previously worked on the field crew, which works for both the borough and authority, so he has no qualms about having two sets of bosses.
“I am familiar with both and how they operate,” he said.
The vacancy was created with the departure of Tom Knights, who left to become superintendent of public works for Butler Township.
McGee now supervises a 12-man crew, maintaining borough roads, grounds and maintenance, as well as making sewage line repairs.
He was serving in that capacity on an interim basis following Knights’ departure nearly five weeks ago.
McGee, a 14-year employee, said he was glad to help out by filling the post temporarily without a guarantee of keeping it.
“Happy to help,” he said.
Authority manager Paul Cornetti backed McGee’s selection, which was recommended by both groups’ joint policy committee.
“I support it fully,” Cornetti said.
Borough manager Mary Papik said council agreed with the authority board that McGee was the best choice.
“Borough council is appreciative of Chuck’s years of service,” she said.
Papik also supported the choice.
“I look forward to the opportunity of working closely with Chuck,” she said.
Cornetti said McGee’s salary would likely be split roughly down the middle between the borough and authority.
Knights was budgeted to earn $55,400 this year. Fifty-eight percent of that salary would have been paid by the borough, reflecting that he had more assigned borough duties.
Papik will be the permanent zoning and code enforcement officer. She was filling those posts on an interim basis.
Mike Corle is the borough sewage enforcement officer.
