Algebra class OK'd for school

KARNS CITY — A Sugarcreek Elementary teacher will take on an additional role with six graders next school year.

Superintendent Eric Ritzert said at Monday’s school board meeting that two Sugarcreek sixth graders this school year took an advanced pre-algebra math class through live video streaming classes at Chicora Elementary, which offers pre-algebra.

With seven sixth graders eligible to take the pre-algebra class at Sugarcreek next year, the larger number of students warranted a face-to-face teacher.

A current sixth grade teacher will be reassigned to teach those students, as well as lead a language arts elective class.

The school district also made a formal proposal to the Butler County Housing Authority to sell the vacant Bruin Elementary building. Ritzert said a lease-to-own deal was proposed, with the housing authority paying utility costs during the next year, plus $100,000 for the property. Board members likely will vote on the sale at next month’s meeting.
