CENTER TWP — The Pioneer Drive-In on Route 8 is opening tonight for its last season.

According to the drive-in’s Facebook page, it will close this year after more than 50 years in business.

It will do so because it will not pay to switch to digital projection, which new movies use. It has five screens.

The property will be leased for other purposes.

The Facebook post did not specify how late into the year it will stay open.

A representative for the drive-in could not be reached for comment.

The Clearview Mall Cinemas closed in March also because it would not pay to switch to digital projection. The manager of that theater at that time said it would cost about $75,000 per screen to make the conversion from 35 millimeter film projectors.
