Centre City project advances

Crews continue tearing down the old Sons of Italy building Wednesday along Main Street. The Centre City project is now in full swing and construction of the new Rite Aid could start this month.

Work on the Centre City project is moving along.

Crews Wednesday continued tearing down the Sons of Italy building on Main Street three weeks after demolition began.

While most of the structure is down, crews need to continue work on a common wall with a neighboring building. The site will be where the new Rite Aid Pharmacy will stand.

The store, which will be significantly larger than the current Rite Aid downtown, will join an 80-room Marriott Springhill Suites hotel and a 225-lot parking garage downtown as part of the project estimated to cost more than $18 million.

Art Cordwell, the director of the city redevelopment authority, said last week the building was hard to take down because of its common wall with the Huntington Bank building.

Cordwell said the next stage of the project is to fill in the basement of the former building to prepare for construction of the pharmacy.

Crews also will move existing power, cable and phone lines over the block underground before construction of the three structures begins.

Construction of the hotel and parking garage is to begin this summer. Both structures will take about a year to complete.

The Rite Aid, which could start being built in May, is to open in October.

The redevelopment authority will own 40 percent of the hotel, while J.S. Capitol Construction, which is the developer for the entire project, will own 60 percent.

The city and city parking authority will own and manage the parking garage.
